Huegli Tech, Switzerland · Dual fuel conversion

Run your diesel genset on up to 70% gas.

GBK Envieco supplies, installs and services Huegli Tech dual fuel systems. Your existing diesel engines run on natural gas or biogas with diesel as the pilot fuel. You cut fuel costs without replacing the engine.

Why dual fuel

Keep the engine. Change the fuel bill.

A dual fuel retrofit replaces most of the diesel with cheaper, cleaner gas. Diesel stays on as the pilot fuel that ignites it, so the engine keeps its diesel reliability and can switch back to 100% diesel at any time.

Cost-effective

Cheaper than a pure gas engine and far cheaper than replacing the engine. It's an attractive retrofit for existing diesel installations, and operating costs fall with every litre of diesel the gas replaces.

No engine modifications

No internal changes are needed. The standard compression ratio, pistons and diesel architecture stay as they are. Installation typically takes 2–3 days with minimal downtime.

Pilot ignition technology

A small diesel injection ignites the gas–air mixture, giving reliable combustion under all operating conditions. No spark plugs or complex ignition systems are needed.

Switch to 100% diesel when gas is unavailable
How it works

A dedicated dual fuel ECU controls both fuels in real time

The engine typically runs on around 30% diesel and 70% natural gas. The Huegli Tech DF-ECU controls both fuels at once, so it responds to load changes better than a pure gas engine and maximises savings at steady load.

Dual fuel conversion diagram: gas passes through solenoid valve, zero pressure regulator and gas regulation flap into the engine intake, controlled by the dual fuel ECU using MAT, exhaust temperature, speed and diesel feedback signals
Gas flows through the solenoid valve, zero-pressure regulator and gas regulation flap to the mixer. The DF-ECU reads air temperature, exhaust temperature, speed and diesel feedback.

The ECU monitors engine parameters and opens the gas valve once the load goes above the set point (25%). From then on it controls:

Air–gas ratio control

Gas is metered automatically from air mass flow, boost pressure and engine load (kW) to hold the right air–fuel ratio.

Diesel ratio and speed control

A diesel pump actuator trims pilot fuel on FIP engines. ECU-controlled engines keep their own speed control.

Built-in knock control

Knock sensors and a CAM sensor identify which cylinder is knocking, so the ECU can correct that cylinder.

Temperature monitoring

The ECU monitors inlet air, manifold air–gas, per-cylinder exhaust and turbocharger exhaust temperatures, and balances both banks on V engines.

Mode 2 · Dual FuelGas substitution of up to about 70%, managed automatically
Why ECU, not PLC?

Built for combustion control, not process automation

Many low-cost dual fuel kits use a PLC and a fixed manual gas valve. Huegli Tech uses a dedicated dual fuel ECU that responds within milliseconds, so the engine can run safely closer to its limits and achieve higher substitution.

Products

A complete conversion system

Each kit is engineered for your engine model, power rating and site conditions. Every part is designed for industrial and marine environments.

Dual Fuel ECU

A microprocessor-based controller that manages gas admission, diesel reduction and engine protection. It has CAN bus integration, data logging and remote monitoring.

Gas Train Assembly

Complete gas conditioning and safety: filtration, pressure regulation and emergency shut-off valves, built to international industrial gas safety standards.

Venturi Gas Mixer

A precision Venturi mixer for an even air–gas mixture, available in sizes from RM25 to RMV40 for different engine displacements.

Knock Detection Sensors

High-sensitivity piezoelectric sensors mounted on the engine block detect combustion irregularities before they can damage the engine.

MAP / MAT Sensors

Manifold air pressure and temperature sensors supply the data for mixture optimisation and load compensation.

Diesel Pump Actuator

A mechanical or electronic actuator that controls diesel injection quantity on FIP engines, giving precise pilot fuel delivery for reliable ignition.

Protection built in: exhaust temperature is monitored cylinder by cylinder. If a limit is exceeded or knock is detected, the ECU cuts the gas share and raises diesel automatically, and closes the gas solenoid valve if needed. Components are IP65-rated with corrosion- and vibration-resistant mounting, and PC software is included for monitoring and tuning.
Compatibility

Which engines and gases work?

Diesel engines with FIP

Traditional high-speed diesel engines with mechanical fuel injection pumps are ideal for dual fuel retrofit.

Diesel engines with ECU

Modern common rail engines with an electronic control unit can also be converted. The Huegli Tech DF-ECU works alongside the engine's own ECU.

Natural gas

PNGCNGLNG

Methane content of 85% or more gives the best combustion efficiency and engine performance.

Biogas

Renewable biogas from anaerobic digestion, typically 55–65% methane. It needs basic conditioning to remove moisture and H₂S.

Industrial process gases

Coke oven gas and selected process gases with enough calorific value. Each one is assessed individually.

Not suitable: propane and LPG can't be used with this dual fuel system because their combustion and autoignition properties are different.
Applications

Where dual fuel pays off

Indian installations range from small commercial backup generators to large industrial prime-power gensets, each customised to its operating needs and gas supply.

Prime-power gensets

Continuous-duty sites, where diesel savings add up fastest.

Industrial plants

Manufacturing, process and heavy industry with a PNG connection.

Commercial and backup power

Hospitals, malls, IT parks and data centres with long run hours.

Biogas plants

Sugar mills, distilleries, dairies and waste-to-energy sites that use their own gas.

Oil and gas sites

Well sites and facilities with associated or pipeline gas available.

Marine and off-road

High-speed diesel engines in demanding duty cycles.
